Every time I open social media, I am greeted by another karting prodigy. The child is six years old. He has sponsors. He has a driver coach. He has a nutrition coach. He has a simulator. He has a social media manager. He apparently has a five-year development plan aimed at Formula One.

At six.

When I was six, my primary motorsport achievement was successfully making race car noises sitting on my bed gripping a LP record like a steering wheel.

Needless to say, our racing careers got off to somewhat different starts.

Modern motorsport has become obsessed with youth. Every week there seems to be another headline about a teenage sensation signing a professional contract or a Formula One prospect who isn’t old enough to drive himself to the racetrack.

Some begin karting before they lose their baby teeth. Some enter professional racing before they have a driver’s license.

Watching all of this can create the impression that if you weren’t identified as the next racing superstar by age ten, your opportunity has come and gone.

Fortunately, club racing couldn’t care less.

The local paddock will unlikely ask for your kindergarten racing résumé. And that’s a good thing. Because like many enthusiasts, my path to racing wasn’t exactly linear.

To be clear, this isn’t the story of someone discovering motorsport late in life. I raced quarter midgets that I was too heavy for, thus never competitive. My parents were supportive, but somehow never suggested mortgaging the family home to launch an international karting campaign.

I’ve driven race cars. I’ve spent time on racetracks. I’ve participated in track events. I’ve experienced enough speed to know that racing is considerably harder than it looks from the grandstands. What I never had was the opportunity to pursue it seriously.

Like many enthusiasts, I spent most of my adult life focused on other priorities. Serving in the military. Going to school. Starting a career. Raising a family. Paying mortgages. Paying taxes. Doing all the things responsible adults are generally expected to do.

Racing existed somewhere in the background. Always present. Always interesting. Never quite within reach. The challenge wasn’t a lack of passion. The challenge was time, money, and opportunity. Those three things have ended more racing careers than blown engines.

I became what many of us become. An expert spectator. I attended races. I read magazines. I watched Formula One, IndyCar, IMSA, and endurance racing. I convinced myself that actual racing was something other people did. The professionals. The wealthy. The lucky few who started at age five and spent their childhood circling kart tracks while the rest of us were learning basic math.

Then something interesting happened. I got older. And I started paying attention to who was actually racing. Not on television. Not at Monaco. Not at Indianapolis.

At local race tracks. The drivers weren’t all twenty years old. Many weren’t even particularly young. Some were in their fifties. Some were in their sixties and some well beyond.

Not reminiscing about their glory days of racing, but actively doing it.

At that point, I began to suspect that perhaps the expiration date on my own racing ambitions had been greatly exaggerated. The truth is that amateur motorsport may be one of the few competitive pursuits where age can actually bring advantages.

Experience matters. Patience matters. Mechanical sympathy matters. The ability to stay calm when things go wrong matters. Young drivers have lightning-fast reflexes.

Older drivers have something equally valuable. A healthy appreciation for consequences.

At twenty years old, your racing strategy is often:

“Full send.”

At fifty-five, your strategy becomes:

“Let’s try not to create paperwork.”

This turns out to be surprisingly effective. The older I get, the more I appreciate the wonderful absurdity of local club racing. Walk through any paddock and you’ll find engineers, business owners, mechanics, retirees, military veterans, doctors, teachers, and every other profession imaginable. You’ll find people discussing tire pressures while simultaneously comparing cholesterol medication. You’ll find drivers debating brake bias while adjusting reading glasses. You’ll find more knee braces than sponsorship decals.

And you’ll quickly discover that nobody seems particularly interested in acting their age.

Thank goodness.

Because acting your age is overrated.

As I write this, there is a thirty-five-year-old Formula Continental race car sitting in my garage. If we’re being completely honest, purchasing a vintage open-wheel race car at this stage of life was probably not the most practical financial decision I have ever made. Somewhere, a financial advisor is reading this and quietly shaking his head.

Yet every time I walk into the garage, I smile. Not because I expect to become the next Mario Andretti. That ship sailed decades ago. Probably around the same time I was figuring out how to pay rent.

What matters is something much simpler. For the first time in my life, racing feels possible. Not professional racing. Not sponsorship deals. Not championships. Just racing. The opportunity to become the racer I never really had the chance to become thirty years ago.

And perhaps that’s what I admire most about the older racers I meet. Every one of them represents a quiet refusal to surrender a dream simply because society believes certain activities belong to younger people.

The green flag doesn’t care how old you are. The stopwatch doesn’t care how old you are. The race car certainly doesn’t care how old you are. It only asks whether you’re willing to climb in and give it a try.

After all, most people don’t stop racing because they get old. They get old because they stop doing the things that make them feel alive.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go see whether my reading glasses fit inside my helmet.

At about 6:30 on race morning, my wife and I exited an UBER and found ourselves walking toward Indianapolis Motor Speedway gates.

For months, I had been preparing for this trip. I had researched seating options, studied maps, booked flights and hotels, talked with veteran attendees, and written a detailed first-timer’s guide for The Grand Touring Journal. By the time race weekend arrived, I felt as prepared as I could possibly be.

As someone who has spent a lifetime around motorsports, I tried to keep my expectations in check. Could Indy live up to the hype?

I’ve attended other Indy Car Races, IMSA events, historic racing festivals, endurance classics, and countless other racing weekends.

Then I spent a day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The truth is — Indianapolis lives up to its description as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.

More Than Just Another Sporting Event

The first thing that struck me was the atmosphere.

Not the size of the crowd, although seeing hundreds of thousands of people streaming toward the Speedway is certainly impressive. It was the mood. People were excited, but relaxed. Friendly. Happy to be there.

As we walked through the gates and eventually climbed into our seats in Paddock 23, I kept waiting for the frustrations that typically accompany major sporting events. Long lines. Overpriced concessions. Cramped seating. Harried staff. Aggressive Fans. The usual reminders that you’re one of tens of thousands of customers being processed through a venue.

They never came.

The food and drink prices were surprisingly reasonable. The grandstands were comfortable. Even with a sold-out crowd, there was enough room to store my backpack and cooler without feeling like I was negotiating territory with the people around me.

That may sound like a small detail, but anyone who attends live events regularly understands how rare it has become.

Indianapolis felt designed for people to enjoy themselves.

What a concept.

The Keepers of the Tradition

Casually exchanging “hellos,” with the people around us, I started to realize that many weren’t occasional attendees; they were regulars. Not regulars in the sense that they had attended a few races. Regulars in the sense that Indianapolis had become part of their family history.

One gentleman I met while standing in line told me his grandfather had originally purchased their seats decades ago. The family had maintained them ever since. Another fan explained that he had been attending for fourteen consecutive years after being introduced to the race by family members.

At Indianapolis, many seat holders maintain rights to their seats year after year. Families pass them down to children and grandchildren. Entire sections are filled with people who have been sitting in roughly the same place for years.

That creates an atmosphere unlike anything I’ve experienced elsewhere. The race isn’t simply an event they attend; it’s a tradition they inherit.

The crowd reflected that reality. For an event drawing more than 350,000 people, the behavior was remarkable. Fans were respectful. Conversations were easy to start. It felt less like attending a major sporting event and more like being welcomed into a community.

A Century of History Comes Alive

One of my favorite moments occurred before the race even began.

As the grandstands filled and anticipation continued building toward the start, a collection of historic Indianapolis 500 race cars rolled onto the track for the annual Historic Car Lap.

For racing fans, it was spectacular. These weren’t replicas. These weren’t static displays. These were genuine Indianapolis race cars spanning more than a century of competition.

The lineup stretched from a 1912 National—the car that won the Indianapolis 500 with Joe Dawson—to Dario Franchitti’s 2010 Target Chip Ganassi Racing winner.

Mario Andretti drove a 1925 Miller Special. Sam Hornish Jr. piloted a 1951 Kurtis-Kraft. Kenny Bräck drove A.J. Foyt’s 1961 Indianapolis-winning machine.

For me, however, the highlight was seeing Bobby Rahal back behind the wheel of his red 1986 Indianapolis 500-winning March. Like many racing fans of my generation, Bobby Rahal was one of the drivers I watched growing up. Seeing him circle the Speedway in the very car that earned his victory connected the modern event to the history I remembered from childhood.

The entire presentation felt authentic. Not corporate. Not manufactured. Just a genuine celebration of the people and machines that built Indianapolis into what it is today.

Memorial Day Means Something Here

The emotional high point of the day arrived shortly before the race itself. As both an Army and Navy veteran, I’ve attended countless military ceremonies over the years. Some are meaningful. Some are obligatory.

What happens at Indianapolis belongs firmly in the first category. The Memorial Day tributes felt sincere from beginning to end.

Standing among hundreds of thousands of people as the ceremonies unfolded, I found myself unexpectedly emotional several times. The military honors were respectful, dignified, and entirely appropriate for the significance of the weekend.

Then They Put On One Heck of a Race

As impressive as everything surrounding the event was, none of it would matter much if the racing itself failed to deliver.

Fortunately, the race was outstanding.

For 500 miles, the field fought relentlessly for position. Lead changes came frequently. Strategies evolved throughout the afternoon. Restarts generated tension. Drivers took risks that looked impossible from the grandstands.

Several times I thought I had identified the likely winner. Several times I was wrong. The race never settled into predictability. It remained compelling from start to finish.

Then, somehow, after all of that, history happened.

The Indianapolis 500 produced the closest finish the race has ever seen. The crowd knew immediately that we had witnessed something special. Having Swedish roots in my family, seeing Felix Rosenqvist emerge victorious only added to the experience.

The finish would have been memorable under any circumstances, but experiencing it during the Indianapolis 500 made it unforgettable.

Why Indianapolis Is Different

Within minutes after the end of the race, rain finally began arriving in earnest.

Ironically, weather forecasts had predicted rain throughout much of the day. Instead, the Speedway somehow threaded the needle perfectly. The race experienced only minor interruptions before the heavier weather held off until the event was essentially complete.

It felt fitting. Everything else had gone right as well. The race had delivered. The weather had cooperated. The traditions had lived up to expectations. The people had exceeded them.

And as I reflected on the day, I now understood that the difference between Indianapolis and many other major sporting events is that it feels like the people running it still care deeply about the experience of the fans.

That sounds simple. It shouldn’t be remarkable, yet somehow it is. You see it in the concession prices. You see it in the seating. You see it in the staff. You see it in the preservation of traditions.

Most importantly, you see it in the generations of families who continue returning year after year.

Indianapolis is not perfect. Nothing involving 350,000 people ever is. But it remains one of the few major sporting events that still feels rooted in the people who attend it.

I arrived expecting a great race. I left having experienced one of the finest sporting events of any kind that I’ve ever attended.

Ahead of the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500, IMS President Doug Boles and Speedway safety officials hosted a media briefing to help prepare fans for race day. What stood out most wasn’t discussion about lap speeds or championship implications. It was how much emphasis they placed on preparation, patience, and understanding what makes the Indy 500 different from virtually every other sporting event in the world.

The recurring message throughout the briefing was simple:

Come with a plan.

That starts with arrival time.

The people who seem to enjoy the Indianapolis 500 the most are rarely the ones scrambling to get through the gates an hour before the green flag. IMS parking lots open at 5 a.m., the gates open at 6 a.m., and there is a reason experienced attendees arrive astonishingly early.

Because the race itself is only part of the experience.

The Indianapolis 500 slowly wakes up over the course of the morning. Georgetown Road fills with fans carrying coolers and folding chairs. The smell of grilled food and sunscreen hangs in the air. The midway begins to come alive. Music echoes across the property while crowds steadily build toward one of the greatest pre-race ceremonies in all of sports.

That ceremony matters.

“Back Home Again in Indiana,” the military tributes, the flyover, the command to start engines — these are not filler before the race. They are part of what makes Indianapolis feel larger than life. Boles himself admitted during the briefing that pre-race is actually his favorite part of the month of May.

The other major takeaway from the briefing was something that longtime Indy attendees already understand:

You cannot fight the scale of this event.

Roughly 350,000 people will attempt to enter and leave the Speedway on race day. No amount of planning eliminates that reality. What IMS leadership emphasized, however, is that understanding the scale changes your expectations, and ultimately your enjoyment of the day.

One of the most useful pieces of advice involved parking and post-race traffic.

Official IMS parking is already sold out, meaning many fans will rely on neighborhood parking west of the Speedway, a tradition that has become part of the event’s identity over generations. But Boles repeatedly stressed something many people misunderstand: parking closer to the track does not necessarily mean leaving faster. In many cases, the opposite is true.

After the race concludes, IMS intentionally slows vehicle movement in certain areas to prioritize pedestrian safety as enormous crowds exit the facility. If your car does not move immediately after the checkered flag, it is often by design, not dysfunction.

Rather than trying to sprint for the exits, Boles encouraged fans to slow down and embrace the moment. Bring water. Bring snacks. Sit at your car for a while and relive the race before attempting to leave.

That may actually be the most Indianapolis 500 advice imaginable.

The fans who tend to have the worst experience are often the ones treating the event like a football game, expecting to immediately jump in the car and drive home. The people who seem happiest are usually sitting in lawn chairs outside their cars an hour later, still talking about pit strategy, near misses, and who should have won.

There were also several genuinely useful practical reminders buried throughout the media briefing.

IMS is now fully cashless, something that still catches some fans by surprise – but there are reverse ATMs that will take cash and issue a card that can be used like a credit card anywhere inside or outside the facility.

The Speedway app has become increasingly valuable because it now shows real-time gate wait times that update every 30 seconds, allowing fans to avoid massive entry lines by simply walking a short distance to another gate.

Rideshare drop-offs will occur at 10th and Polco Street rather than directly at the Speedway gates.

Cooler rules remain in effect, and security screening has become significantly more streamlined thanks to newer open-gate scanning systems that allow most fans to walk directly through without removing items from pockets or bags.

One of the more interesting details from the briefing involved weather operations.

IMS safety officials explained that the Speedway operates with an extremely sophisticated weather monitoring system that includes National Weather Service personnel onsite inside race control. Fans may occasionally be asked to leave grandstands well before rain actually arrives, particularly if lightning enters a designated safety radius.

The briefing even included discussion of robotic “drone dogs” being added as another layer of event security this year — a strangely futuristic detail at an event that still feels wonderfully analog in so many ways.

The event is massive. It is imperfect. It is chaotic. It asks something from you as a fan.

But if you arrive prepared, allow extra time, embrace the traditions, and understand that patience is part of the experience, the Indianapolis 500 becomes something far greater than simply watching cars turn left for 500 miles.

It becomes one of the great sporting experiences in the world.

No power steering. No paddle shifters. No quiet layer of software correcting mistakes in the background. Just a steering wheel, a gearbox, and a throttle.

Every lap was a negotiation between speed and restraint. Between bravery and consequence. That was part of the appeal.

The Way It Used to Feel

I grew up around IndyCar in the mid-late 1980s and the memories tend to come back the same way; loud, a little chaotic, and unmistakably alive. The cars were the most raw, beautiful pieces of machinery I had ever seen — and I still feel the same way today.

The cars moved. Constantly. They didn’t glide around the track in neat, predictable arcs. They twitched. They stepped out. They demanded constant corrections. You could see the hands at work—small adjustments, quick reactions, a rhythm between driver and machine that felt almost improvised.

Drivers like Rick Mears made it look smooth — but that smoothness was earned, not engineered.

The cockpit used to be a place of decisions. Now it’s a place of execution.

And then there was the engine.

Turbocharged power that arrived suddenly, aggressively, sometimes unpredictably. Drivers weren’t just managing grip and traffic; they were managing the car’s appetite for its own mechanical limits.

Adjusting boost mid-race wasn’t a gimmick. It was a decision with consequences.

Push it too far, and you might win — or you might not finish at all.

And Then Everything Changed

The Modern IndyCar, in many ways, is the opposite of that chaos.

The cars are still fast—unquestionably so—but they are also more stable, more predictable, more refined.

The steering wheel alone tells the story.

Where there was once simplicity, there is now complexity. Buttons. Displays. Data. Layers of information available at a glance.

And beyond the cockpit, there’s an entire ecosystem supporting the driver in real time. Engineers monitoring telemetry. Strategy unfolding corner by corner. Adjustments made not just by instinct, but by data.

The car is no longer just a machine.

It’s part of a system.

Safety Changed Everything

The introduction of the aeroscreen, improvements in chassis design, and a broader commitment to protecting drivers have changed the sport in ways that can’t be overstated.

Incidents that would have been catastrophic in earlier eras are now survivable.

That’s not a trade-off. That’s progress.

But it does change the feeling of the sport.

The Driver Then… and Now

Which brings us to a question that tends to sit just beneath the surface:

What exactly is the role of the driver now? It’s not a question of talent. Today’s drivers are extraordinary.

But the nature of the job has shifted.

There was a time when the driver was responsible for managing variables the car couldn’t handle on its own. Now, many of those variables are managed elsewhere.

The driver is still essential — But no longer alone in the equation.

The modern driver doesn’t fight the machine. He perfects it.

What We Gained

Modern IndyCar racing has gained a great deal.

The competition is tighter. The margins are smaller. The execution cleaner.

And safety—again—is not something to gloss over.

The sport is better for it.

What We Lost (Even If We Don’t Say It)

And still… something changed.

Not in speed, but in feeling.

There was a time when the cars had personalities. Now, much of that has been refined. Smoothed out.

The sport hasn’t lost its edge — but it has changed its texture.

Somewhere in the Middle

Maybe this isn’t about deciding which era was better.

Maybe it’s about understanding what each era represents.

The analog years were about instinct.

Today’s era is about precision.

Both demand greatness.

There’s a certain kind of decision that doesn’t make sense on paper.

It doesn’t align with your schedule, doesn’t fit neatly into your budget,
And it definitely doesn’t come with any guarantee of success.

This was one of those decisions.

A few days ago, I bought a race car.

Not a new one. Not a turnkey one. Not even a particularly good one—at least not right now. It’s a 1990 open-wheel car —An Elden FF2000/FC.
A chassis that, at some point in its life, ran hard, ran well… and then slowly slipped into the quiet limbo that so many old race cars do.

It’s complete. Mostly.
It’s intact. More or less.
And it’s very far from ready.

Which, of course, is exactly why I bought it. Because this isn’t about acquiring something finished, it’s about understanding it. How it was built; why it was built that way; what it takes to bring it back—not just cosmetically, but mechanically, structurally… honestly.

I’ve spent a career around developing and operationalizing systems. I understand process. But this is different.

This is learning—again. From the ground up.

How to inspect a suspension not on a spreadsheet, but on a concrete floor.
How to source parts for a nearly one-off chassis that most people have never heard of.
How to make decisions between “correct,” “safe,” and “what’s actually possible.”

And eventually—get it back on the track. Not as a concept or nostalgia, but as a machine that deserves to be used the way it was intended.

This will not be a quick project.

There will be wrong turns.
There will be parts that don’t fit (likely a few busted knuckles) and solutions that don’t work the first time.
There will be moments where it would have been far easier to walk away.

But that’s not really the point, is it?

The teardown.
The decisions.
The setbacks.
The small wins that matter more than they should.

And, if everything goes to plan… the first time it turns a wheel in anger again.

I recently flew from Orange County, California to Reno, Nevada for a work meeting on JSX Airlines. I had no particular expectations going in. But by the time I landed in Reno, I realized I had experienced something increasingly rare in modern travel — a flight that actually felt civilized.

The flight itself was smooth and quiet — a short trip from Orange County to Reno that felt far more pleasant than many business class flights I’ve taken on traditional carriers.

What surprised me most, however, was the pricing.

This wasn’t a private jet, and it wasn’t priced like one. The cost was very reasonable — especially when you factor in the time saved, the comfort, and the overall ease of the experience.

It occupies a middle ground between commercial airline travel and private aviation.

For me, the Porsche 956 and 962 are at the very top of that list.

They weren’t just fast. They looked fast standing still. Long, low, and impossibly wide, they felt more like machines from another world than traditional race cars. Even today, decades later, the design still looks modern — purposeful, elegant, and brutally functional.

For many enthusiasts, these cars represent the golden era of endurance racing. For me, the fascination started much earlier.

Sunday morning at Long Beach is one of the most enjoyable parts of the entire weekend. The crowds haven’t fully built yet, the air is still cool, coming off the harbor, and you can walk the circuit, visit the paddock, and soak in the atmosphere before everything ramps up.

Some of the best Sunday experiences happen before the race even begins:

• Walking the waterfront as the grandstands begin to fill

• Watching teams prepare cars in the paddock

• Hearing IndyCars fire up for the first time

• Finding your seat early and watching the crowd build

Long Beach is uniquely compact, which makes race day especially enjoyable. You can move around easily, explore different vantage points, and still get back to your seat well before the green flag.

Another tip: Plan your movement before the IndyCar race starts.
Once the crowd fills in, navigating the circuit becomes much slower. If you want to explore merchandise, food, or paddock access, do it early.

And when race time approaches, the atmosphere noticeably shifts. The pre-race ceremonies begin, the crowd grows louder, and the anticipation builds in a way that’s hard to describe — but easy to feel.
